Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the Polyester American Flags - Heavy-Duty and All-Weather Flags Made in the USA state flag — including history, display rules, sizing, and where to buy.

Polyester is the right choice for coastal properties with salt air, open fields and exposed rural locations, commercial buildings and government facilities that fly flags every day, and any location where winds are consistently strong. If your nylon flag is wearing out in less than 3 months, polyester is almost certainly the better investment for your location.

Polyester is heavier, denser, and more abrasion-resistant than nylon. It handles high winds, salt air, and continuous outdoor exposure better than nylon and will significantly outlast it in demanding environments. The tradeoff is that polyester needs more wind to fly than nylon — it does not fill and fly as easily in a light breeze. For most residential locations with moderate wind, nylon is still the better everyday choice.

2-ply polyester uses two layers of woven polyester fabric rather than one, making it significantly stronger and more durable than single-ply polyester. It is the heavy-duty standard for commercial flagpoles, government buildings, military installations, and any high-traffic outdoor location where the flag flies daily and longevity matters most.

In high-wind or coastal environments where a nylon flag might last 2 to 4 months, a quality 2-ply polyester flag typically lasts 6 to 12 months or longer under the same conditions. In moderate residential settings polyester will generally outlast nylon by a meaningful margin. Bringing the flag in during extreme storm events further extends its lifespan.

For a 20 ft residential or light commercial pole, a 3x5 ft flag is standard. For a 25 ft pole, a 4x6 is more proportional. For commercial poles at 30 to 35 ft, a 5x8 is the standard size. At 40 to 45 ft, a 6x10 is correct. A good rule of thumb is the flag length should be about one-quarter the height of your pole.

Generally no. Polyester flags are heavier than nylon and do not fly well on short house-mount bracket poles where wind speeds are lower and the flag needs to be light enough to fill easily. For a standard 5 to 6 ft wall-mount bracket pole, nylon is the correct material. Polyester performs best on taller in-ground and commercial poles where wind is more consistent and stronger.

Yes. Polyester is more cold-tolerant than nylon and handles freezing temperatures and ice better. In extreme cold, nylon can become brittle and crack at the grommets or fold lines. If you are in a northern climate with harsh winters, polyester is the better material for year-round outdoor flying.
